A major investigation says state officials in Calhoun and northwest Georgia knew for nearly two decades that toxic “forever chemicals” known as PFAS were polluting local rivers and drinking water tied to the region’s carpet industry — but residents were never warned.

The report alleges chemicals used in stain-resistant carpet production flowed from mills into waterways feeding drinking water systems across Georgia and even into neighboring Alabama.

Families in the area now say they’re dealing with serious health concerns linked to PFAS exposure, including liver disease, thyroid conditions, and certain cancers.

Environmental advocates say testing as early as 2008 showed alarming contamination levels, while critics accuse the Georgia Environmental Protection Division of failing to act aggressively or notify the public.

Meanwhile, lawsuits continue to grow against major carpet manufacturers and chemical suppliers as cities face massive cleanup costs.

⚠️ PFAS chemicals are known as “forever chemicals” because they can remain in the human body and environment for decades.
