Georgia Power And Google Partner To Expand Nuclear Energy In Georgia

#WQEB973NEWZ | ATLANTA,GA-Georgia Power and Google have announced a new agreement aimed at expanding nuclear energy production at Plant Vogtle near Waynesboro and Plant Hatch near Baxley.

The proposed upgrades could add about 96 megawatts of electricity to Georgia’s power grid. Regulators estimate the agreement could generate up to $900 million in projected savings for customers over the life of the facilities.

The plan involves extended power uprates, which would allow the existing nuclear reactors to produce more electricity through modifications to equipment such as turbines, pumps, motors and cooling systems.

Google would subscribe to a new nuclear energy tariff and receive Zero-Emission Credits tied to the additional carbon-free electricity.

The agreement still needs approval from the Georgia Public Service Commission before the proposed upgrades can move forward.
