Fulton County Pairs Deputies With Mental Health Clinicians To Help Keep People Out Of Jail
#WQEB973Newz | South Fulton,GA- Fulton County is pairing sheriff’s deputies with licensed mental health clinicians to help people experiencing a crisis get support instead of ending up in jail. 🧠🚔
The county’s Co-Responder, or CoRe, unit launched as a pilot program in May. Teams combine law enforcement training with behavioral health expertise to respond to mental health crises and determine what resources a person may need.
During its first four months, the program responded to more than 500 calls and connected more than 100 people with treatment or support services.
The team can help connect people with mental health treatment, medical care and community resources. In situations where it is safe and appropriate, clinicians and deputies may be able to resolve a crisis without an arrest or hospital visit.
The program currently operates in six cities across South Fulton, with the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office hoping to eventually expand it countywide.
