BAFTA Jury Member Quits Over Handling of Tourette’s Tic at Film Awards: “Utterly Unforgivable”
#wqeb973newz | London, UK – Jonte Richardson shared on social media that he won’t dedicate his time to an organization “that has consistently failed to protect the dignity of its Black guests,” following an incident where a Tourette’s activist yelled a racial slur while Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were on stage
The BAFTA debate has reached its third day.
Filmmaker and independent producer Jonte Richardson announced on social media that he is resigning as a BAFTA jury member due to the British Academy’s response to the racial slur yelled while Sinners duo Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo presented the best visual effects award.
Tourette’s advocate and executive producer of the BAFTA-nominated I Swear, John Davidson, was presented to the audience at Sunday’s BAFTA Film Awards event, and the crowd cautioned about his Tourette syndrome, a disorder marked by abrupt, involuntary, and repetitive movements or sounds known as “tics.” Davidson — whose experiences inspired I Swear, which earned Robert Aramayo the BAFTA for best actor — later expressed that he was “profoundly embarrassed if anyone thinks my involuntary tics are deliberate or have any significance.”

The BBC expressed regret for not removing the slur from the final broadcast, which was aired on a two-hour delay by the British broadcaster. BAFTA has faced criticism for mishandling the situation and has issued an “unreserved” apology to Jordan and Lindo while standing by Davidson’s attendance at the ceremony. #jonterichardson #quits #filmawards #bafta #tourettes #wqeb973newz
