A 16-year-old student is facing multiple charges after deputies say a firearm was found inside his backpack as he entered Upson Lee High School. Authorities say the weapon detection system alerted staff immediately, allowing the situation to be addressed before it escalated. School officials emphasized that at no point were students or staff in danger.
According to the Upson County Sheriff’s Office, the gun was identified as a Ruger .380 caliber pistol that had previously been reported as “lost” by Atlanta police. The teen has been charged with possession of a weapon on school property, possession of a handgun while under the age of 18, and theft of lost property. The student has not been publicly identified.
District leaders reiterated that student and staff safety remains their top priority and thanked families and the community for their continued support as officials work to keep campuses secure.
