Metro Atlanta Drivers Confused by New HAWK Pedestrian Signals, Officials Say System Improves Safety

#wqeb973newz | Atlanta,GA -Confusion Grows Over New HAWK Pedestrian Signals Across Metro Atlanta, But Officials Say They’re Making Roads Safer

Drivers across metro Atlanta are scratching their heads over the city’s new HAWK (High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk) signals, which feature a mix of yellow and red lights to help pedestrians cross busy roads safely. 🚦

The signals, now appearing in areas like Marietta near Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, have caused hesitation and traffic delays as many motorists remain unsure when to stop — and when it’s safe to go.

Cobb County officials are urging drivers to learn how the HAWK system works:
⚠️ Yellow means slow down and prepare to stop.
🔴 Solid red means stop — pedestrians are crossing.
🔴 Flashing red means you may proceed after stopping and ensuring the crosswalk is clear.

Despite the confusion, county transportation leaders say the system is designed to increase pedestrian visibility, reduce crashes, and improve traffic flow by minimizing unnecessary stops.

Much like roundabouts, these innovative signals take some getting used to — but officials insist that once drivers understand the pattern, both traffic safety and efficiency will improve across Atlanta’s busiest roads. 🚗🚶‍♀️
